Why Alps

Why I’m building Alps

I've collected workouts and programs for years. A fitness magazine's summer program when I was a kid. Science-based protocols from books. Group classes with the workout of the day on a whiteboard. All kinds of yoga. Plenty of injuries, and the paper handouts from physical therapy that came with them. Every one of them lived somewhere different — one app for lifting, another for running, a third for swimming, a notebook for the rest. A lot of it wasn't tracked at all. I'd try something new and lose it. Or track it faithfully in one place and have no way to see it next to everything else I was doing.

I didn't want a better program. I already had programs I liked. I wanted somewhere to drop a simple routine without downloading another app. I wanted to be able to pull up something I did three years ago and do it again. I wanted one place to put all of it.

So I built Alps.

The part I didn't expect: once I had a place to store a structured, repeatable thing and track it over time, I stopped using it only for workouts. I've run yearly reviews in it. I've tracked my son's mouth expander turns. I've added a sports psychology exercise from one of my favorite books. It turns out “a thing I want to do repeatedly and see progress on” describes a lot more of life than just training.

Right now the focus is the core loop: capture something, turn it into a reusable template, track it, and reuse it. And capture it from wherever it actually comes from — a book on your shelf, your Apple Watch or Garmin or Whoop, or an influencer posting a workout on Instagram every morning.

Alps isn't trying to build you the best workout plan. There are plenty of apps for that. Alps is where your existing favorites live — a place that compiles, tracks, and grows with you.

I'm looking forward to seeing what people put in it.
